We left Mt. Koya and headed to Tokushima, the reason for our whole journey to Japan. On the way, we all stopped at a place that Jon found suggested on the internet...the Awashima Doll Shrine in Wakayama. It is a place where people donate their old dolls. Because they believe that dolls have spirits, they don't want to throw them away. Instead they pile them around this shrine. We found the whole thing to be quite odd, and Jon learned that maybe the internet doesn't always tell the truth.
We realized also, that when we are visiting things off the beaten track, it usually follows the 80/20 percent rule....80 percent of the time we find amazing things that we are so glad we looked for, and 20 percent of the time we find duds that we wish we hadn't spent the time on. This would be in the 20 percent category.
All around the shrine are different kinds of dolls and statues. I will just let the pictures tell the rest of the story.
