new friends

After meeting our hosts, we jumped in their vans and they took us to the sea. We were going on a private boat ride to an island where we would visit a unique art exhibit.

One of the executives at the company had a 15 year old daughter who spoke pretty good English.  The girls enjoyed getting to know her and quickly became new friends.

Andrew was so excited for the boat ride!

We spent most of the ride sitting in the front on the net enjoying the cool breeze and views around us.

They were so kind to us.  They brought us nice, cold drinks and there was always someone within arms distance from the little kids.  It was fun to be with our hosts' families.

When we arrived on the little island we had a hike up the hill to the museum.  It was so incredibly hot and humid.  We were all dripping with sweat.  All of a sudden a van pulled up and picked up all the women and children.  We were whisked up the hill so we did not have to walk.  Unfortunately, the men continued their journey on foot and met us at the top.

It was a beautiful view looking down the hill.

I loved this scene.  These are rice fields in front of the ocean.  It thought the green rice plants against the blue water and sky was stunning.

When we all got up the hill, they led us to this little restaurant.  It looked a little iffy at first, but it was incredible.  There were entertainers singing and it was so nice to cool down in the shade.

We were served a delicious meal and enjoyed the company.

Some of our new friends were assigned to document our time with them.  They were continually taking pictures.  I can't wait until we can see all of their pictures.

After lunch we decided to skip the hike and take the bus back down to the museum.  Here are the kids waiting for the bus.

I love this picture of Lauren.

This little guy was so cute.  He and Andrew entertained themselves while we waited.

His sister was adorable too!

I loved the Teshima art museum.  It is very difficult to explain.  There is no photography, so I will attempt to describe what we experienced.  The museum is one big room built into the landscape.  It is a concrete curvy building with a two big openings on top.  Inside there are varying sizes of drops of water on the floor that are part of the exhibit.  You are not supposed to touch any of the water.  These water droplets gently and gradually come out of tiny little holes on the floor and then softly roll around to join other droplets.  Eventually they roll into different little holes on the floor.  The openings in the ceiling allow the wind to gently blow a single string across the ceiling.  Boy this is hard to explain.  It is a quiet, contemplative place where you could just sit on the cold floor and relax watching the wind and the water.  I could have spent hours there.  We found it interesting that the very young were captivated and quiet watching the living museum as well as the adults.  It was definitely one of a kind and very cool.  Most definitely 80 percent.

After visiting the museum, we were ready to head back to the boat.

There were naps on the net as we rode back.

One of Andrew's favorite things was to get the grape Fanta drinks they have here.  It is different than back home.  Our hosts quickly realized that and usually had grape Fanta available.

We found it funny that there was only one person we saw that had blond hair.  We had to take a picture of the two of the them together!

On the way back to our hotel, we stopped for dinner in the city of Takamatsu.  Takamatsu is known for their famous udon noodles.  They brought us to the best known restaurant for udon noodles, where the recipe is hundreds of years old.

We loved these guys.  They were awesome and so fun with the kids.

Here are the famous udon noodles.  They were delicious!

They taught us the proper way to eat the noodles - you put some in your mouth and with a loud noise, slurp them up.  It is actually harder than it sounds.  My slurps mostly sounded like squeaks, but Lauren got it down!

What an amazing, fun day!
